Chinese President Hu Jintao said Thursday that China firmly supports Europe's efforts to overcome the debt crisis and the important role that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other institutions play in resolving European debt issues.
Hu made the remarks while meeting with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Great Hall of the People here, reported Xinhua.
In regards to the European debt crisis, Hu said Europe's early financial recovery is conducive to the stability and recovery of the world economy and to China's economic growth.
He said China is ready to maintain communication and coordination with the international community to jointly prevent risks, safeguard the stability of the global financial system and promote sustainable recovery and growth in the world economy.
Merkel said many uncertain factors currently exist in the world economy, as the eurozone is faced with difficulties. The calm, appropriate response of China and the confidence and support it places on the euro and the European economy are especially precious to Europe.
She also said the eurozone nations are confident and determined to properly address the debt problem and further advance European integration.
Germany hopes to increase trade, investment and economic cooperation between Europe and China, said Merkel, who also expressed opposition to trade and investment protectionism.
Merkel is in Beijing to attend the second round of China-Germany government consultation.
Hu congratulated the success of the consultations, saying China is ready to work with Germany to practically implement the results achieved in both high-level meetings and the second round of government consultation.
Noting that both China and Germany are countries of major influence in the world, Hu said the two countries share broad common interests on bilateral, regional and multilateral affairs, adding that the two countries jointly shoulder major responsibilities and face the same challenges.
Hu said China places great importance on its relations with Germany and is ready to deepen strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation and lift the China-Germany strategic partnership to higher levels.
Merkel said bilateral exchanges and cooperation are very close at the governmental, economic and people-to-people levels.
She added that the second round of government consultation between the two countries has been fruitful, as the two sides signed a number of agreements, fully proving that Germany-China relations are based on a solid foundation and a truly strategic partnership.
Pakistani officials say at least eight militants have been killed in northwest Pakistan, as security forces continue to target militant hideouts.
Fighting continued for another day in the Bajaur tribal agency Thursday. The day before, authorities said at least three soldiers and six militants were killed in clashes there.
Meanwhile, senior Pakistani intelligence officials, who did not give their names, confirmed to the Associated Press that a top commander of the militant Haqqani network, Badruddin Haqqani, was killed last week in a U.S. drone strike in the North Waziristan tribal agency.
The al-Qaida and Taliban-linked group is blamed for a number of attacks on U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.
Also Thursday, the United States announced it has placed sanctions on eight members of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. The group is blamed for the 2008 terrorist attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people. ?
The U.S. Treasury froze any assets of the Lashkar members, including Sajjid Mir, who allegedly helped plan the assaults.
Separately, Pakistani officials said gunmen killed a Shi'ite Muslim judge in Quetta, the capital of the southwestern province of Baluchistan. Police suspect it was a sectarian attack.
Earlier this month, gunmen killed 22 Shi'ites after ordering them off buses in Baluchistan.

DENVER (AP) ? Nearly a third of people whose citizenship and right to vote were questioned by Colorado's secretary of state are actually U.S. citizens, election officials said Wednesday, prompting Democrats to question the motives behind the effort to clean up voting rolls as a tightly contested presidential election approaches.
Earlier this month, Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler sent letters to nearly 4,000 people questioning their citizenship as part of a plan to have them voluntarily withdraw or confirm their eligibility to vote.
State officials were able to run 1,400 of those names through a federal immigration database and found that more than 1,200 were U.S. citizens. So far, they've found none who are non-citizens and registered to vote.
Martha Tierney, an attorney for the Colorado Democratic Party, told election officials during a meeting Wednesday that they were wasting their time on a small group of voters instead of focusing on ensuring a fair and accurate fall election.
"This is a witch hunt and you should be embarrassed that you're going down this road," she said.
Gessler's office plans to release updated figures on Thursday detailing how many of the 4,000 people responded directly to affirm their citizenship or withdraw their voter registration. He said no further action will be taken involving people who did not respond to the letters.
Democrats have criticized the effort to correct the voting rolls and said it could disenfranchise legal voters or make it difficult to exercise their right to vote. More than three-quarters of the letters went to Democrats and independent voters.
Gessler denies any political motivation and insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls. His office said it did not look at party registration when sending the letters.
Gessler spokesman Rich Coolidge said that ensuring only eligible voters cast ballots is an important component of running a successful election.
"As the state's chief election official, he is obligated to make sure that only eligible voters are casting ballots," Coolidge said before the hearing. "We identified a vulnerability in the system, we identified people who exploited, or accidentally exploited that vulnerability, and we're going to shut down that loophole."
Still, critics have questioned Gessler's political motivations in a year where both major parties see Colorado as key to winning the presidential election. Control of the state Legislature and competitive congressional races are also at stake.
Across the country Republicans have aggressively pursued initiatives to verify voters' citizenship, particularly in swing states, much to the ire of Democrats who worry that key parts of their base ? Latinos and seniors ? are likely to be disenfranchised.
Election chiefs in Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? all expected to be competitive in November ? joined Colorado and other states asking the federal government for access to the database to verify citizenship. Colorado got access to the database last week.
Samantha Meiring, 37, a Colorado voter whose status was questioned, waved a letter as she told election officials Wednesday that she was speaking "as an immigrant and U.S. citizen who got a lovely little letter in the mail."
"I find it absolutely ridiculous that a U.S. citizen is being asked to jump through additional hoops to exercise a right to vote," said the registered Democrat, a South African immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2010. "I think you're chasing people that don't need to be chased."
A total of 1,566 letters went to Democrats and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.
Using information from the department of motor vehicles, Gessler identified people who once presented documents showing they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver's license. It's unclear whether those people registered to vote by accident while getting a driver's license or when approached by someone as part of registration drive.
Gessler's office provided The Associated Press with the party affiliation of people who received the letters but denied a request to see their names, citing an ongoing investigation.
Democrats and voting advocacy groups said Gessler has shown no proof of widespread fraud and overreached by sending the letters.
"They basically sent out the functional equivalent of an email blast," said Mark Grueskin, an attorney who represents Democrats on election issues.
The American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado said at least 25 eligible voters who got the letters have contacted the organization and the number is growing.
Democrats do not want Gessler to hold hearings for the fewer than 200 remaining people whose citizenship status hasn't been verified on the federal immigration database. They say further hearings are unnecessary because county clerks already have the power to handle challenges to voter registrations.
If Gessler's plan to hold hearings is approved by his office, people could start receiving a new round of letters as soon as next week notifying them that their citizenship is in doubt.
Deputy Secretary of State Suzanne Staiert said the goal is to keep accurate voter rolls, and that officials are working in the best interest of immigrants who may be unaware that they're breaking the law by being registered to vote or by voting.
"I understand that you think this is a very small percentage," she told opponents of the plan, "but for these people, this is their life."
We're sure you remember Zahir Rana, the gentleman who piloted a Ferrari Enzo into the Atlantic Ocean during last year's Targa Newfoundland. When the gentleman took his co-pilot and his car for a swim, he happened to be wearing a racing suit once worn by Rubens Barrichello. Back when the Formula One racer drove for Ferrari, the team was sponsored by Marlboro, which meant the cigarette company's logo was plastered all over the the suit. As it turns out, Health Canada takes a dim view of tobacco advertising during any racing event, and despite the fact that Rana had bought the signed suit at a charity auction as a piece of racing history, the government agency took offense to photos from the race depicting Rana in full Marlboro regalia.
According to Wheels.ca, Targa President Bob Giannou found himself on the raw end of phone calls and letters from Health Canada, informing him of "prohibitions regarding the promotion of tobacco products," even if the reference is historical.
Does that mean Canadian officials are going to block the public appearance of the hordes of vintage race cars sponsored by the likes of Rothmans, Marlboro, John Player Special, Camel, Lucky Strike, Kool and Skoal just to name a few? Like it or not, tobacco and racing have a long and storied history together, and attempting to censor that history from the public eye is downright foolish. Good luck, Health Canada.
Sony's latest and greatest HDTV popped up in Japan earlier and now it has made its European debut as the HX95 series at IFA 2012. We're not seeing pricing information or a release date listed, but the benefit of a native English press release confirms it features full LED backlighting as well as the company's latest image processing technology. All that's left now is to find out any US release details, we'll see if we get any more information today or have to wait until CEDIA 2012 next week. In the meantime, check the PR after the break and browse through a gallery of sweet images showing off the slim monolithic design.

Save lives by creating a plan for dealing with natural catastrophes or everyday emergencies
Planning for a disaster may seem overwhelming, but The HSUS's disaster guide will make it easy. We'll tell you what you can do right now, when disaster strikes, and even after to make sure that you and your pets come through just fine. The first step is to make your disaster plan.
A good disaster plan will prepare you for disasters that come with some warning (hurricanes, wildfires, or floods) and those that strike suddenly (chemical spills or tornadoes). You'll even be ready for extended power outages that become true emergencies if they happen during a heat wave or ice storm
TO-DO LIST FOR PROTECTING YOUR PETS IN A DISASTER ?
Did you know that the federal government now officially supports including pets in disaster plans? FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said, ?Animals are important members of millions of families across this country?and as such they should also be included in our family emergency plans.? You're on your way.
?1. Start getting ready now
ID your pet
Make sure that your cat or dog is wearing a collar and identification that is up to date and visible at all times. You'll increase your chances of being reunited with a lost pet by having him or her microchipped. If your pet is adopted from a shelter or rescue organization, make sure the registration has been transferred to you and is not still with the adoption group.
Put your cell phone number on your pet's tag. It may also be a good idea to include the phone number of a friend or relative outside your immediate area?in case you have had to evacuate.
Put together your disaster kit
Every member of your family should know what he or she needs to take when you evacuate. You'll also need supplies for your pet. Stock up on non-perishables well ahead of time,?and have everything ready to go at a moment's notice. Keep everything accessible and stored in sturdy containers (duffel bags, covered trash containers, etc.) that can be carried easily. Any dry pet food should be stored in air-tight containers and refreshed every 6 months.
If you live in an area prone to flooding or hurricanes, make a kit to keep in your car in case you have to evacuate quickly. If you live in an area where tornadoes occur, store supplies in a tornado-proof room or cellar. (Learn more about keeping your pet safe during a tornado.)
A basic disaster kit
Food and water for at least five days for each pet, bowls and a manual can opener if you are packing canned pet food. People need at least one gallon of water per person per day. While your pet may not need that much, keep an extra gallon on hand if your pet has been exposed to chemicals or flood waters and needs to be rinsed.
Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and a first aid kit. A pet first aid book is also a good idea.
Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop, garbage bags to collect all pets' waste.
Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets safely and to ensure that your pets can't escape. Carriers should be large enough to allow your pet to stand comfortably, turn around, and lie down. (Your pet may have to stay in the carrier for hours at a time.) Be sure to have a secure cage with no loose objects inside it to accommodate smaller pets?who may also need blankets or towels for bedding and warmth as well as special items, depending on their species.
Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your pets to help others identify them in case you and your pets become separated?and to prove that they are yours once you're reunited.
Pet beds and toys, if you can easily take them, to reduce stress.
Written information about your pets' feeding schedules, medical conditions, and behavior issues along with the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets or place them in foster care.
Other useful items include newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags, grooming items, and household bleach.
Find a safe place to stay ahead of time
Some communities have groups that have solely focused on providing emergency sheltering for pets, and other communities simply don?t have the resources. That's why you should never assume that you will be allowed to bring your pet to an emergency shelter.
Before disaster hits call your local office of emergency management to see if you will be allowed to evacuate with your pets and that there will be shelters that take people and their pets in your area. And just to be safe, track down a pet-friendly safe place for your family and pets.
?Find a pet-friendly hotel or motel:
Make arrangements with friends or relatives. Ask people outside the immediate area if they would be able to shelter you and your pets?or just your pets?if necessary. If you have more than one pet, you may need to arrange to house them at separate locations.
Consider a kennel or veterinarian's office. Make a list of boarding facilities and veterinary offices that might be able to shelter animals in disaster emergencies (include their 24-hour telephone numbers).
As a last resort, ask your local animal shelter. Some shelters may be able to provide foster care or shelter for pets in an emergency. But shelters have limited resources and are likely to be stretched to their limits during an emergency.
Plan for your pet in case you're not home
A disaster or evacuation order may come when you're out of the house.
Make arrangements well in advance for a trusted neighbor or nearby friend or family member to take your pets and meet you at a specified location. Be sure the person is comfortable with your pets and your pets are familiar with him or her. Give your emergency caretaker a key to your home and show her or him where your pets are likely to be (or hide) and where your disaster supplies are kept.
If you use a pet-sitting service,?it may be able to help, but discuss the possibility well in advance.
?2. If you evacuate, take your pet
Rule number one: If it isn't safe for you, it isn't safe for your pets. Even if you think you will only be gone for a few hours, take your pets. You have no way of knowing how long you'll be kept out of the area, and you may not be able?or allowed?to go back for your pets.
Pets left behind in a disaster can easily be injured, lost, or killed. Those left inside your home can escape through storm-damaged areas, such as broken windows. And pets turned loose to fend for themselves are likely to become victims of exposure, starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, or accidents. Leaving dogs tied or chained outside in a disaster is a death sentence.
Rule number two: Evacuate early. Don't wait for a mandatory evacuation order. Some people who have waited to be evacuated by emergency officials have been told to leave their pets behind.
The smell of smoke, high winds or lightening may make your pet more fearful and difficult to load into a crate or carrier. Evacuating before conditions become severe will keep everyone safer and make the process less stressful.
3. If you stay home, do it safely
If your family and pets must wait out a storm or other disaster at home, identify a safe area of your home where you can all stay together. Make that safe area animal friendly:
Close off or eliminate unsafe nooks and crannies where frightened cats may try to hide.
Move dangerous items such as tools or toxic products that have been stored in the area.
Be sure to close your windows and doors, stay inside, and follow the instructions from your local emergency management office.
Bring your pets indoors as soon as local authorities say trouble is on the way. Keep pets under your direct control; if you have to evacuate, you will not have to spend time trying to find them. Keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers, and make sure they are wearing identification.
If you have a room you can designate as a "safe room," put your emergency supplies in that room in advance, including your pet's crate and supplies. Have any medications and a supply of pet food and water inside watertight containers, along with your other emergency supplies. If there is an open fireplace, vent, pet door, or similar opening in the house, close it off with plastic sheeting and strong tape.
Listen to the radio periodically, and don't come out until you know it's safe.
4. Keep taking care even after the disaster
Your home may be a very different place after the emergency is over, and it may be hard for your pets to adjust.
Don't allow your pets to roam loose. Familiar landmarks and smells might be gone, and your pet will probably be disoriented. Pets can easily get lost in such situations.
While you assess the damage, keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers inside the house. If your house is damaged, your pets could escape.
Be patient with your pets after a disaster. Try to get them back into their normal routines as soon as possible. Be ready for behavioral problems caused by the stress of the situation. If these problems persist, or if your pet seems to be having any health problems, talk to your veterinarian.
If your community has been flooded, search your home and yard for wild animals who may have sought refuge there. Stressed wildlife can pose a threat to you and your pet.
?5. Be ready for everyday emergencies
For your pet, an emergency can be something much less dramatic than a hurricane or earthquake.
?You can't get home to your pet
There may be times that you can't get home to take care of your pets. Icy roads may trap you at the office overnight, an accident may send you to the hospital?things happen. But you can make sure your pets get the care they need by making arrangements now:
Find a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member and give him or her a key to your house or barn. Make sure this back-up caretaker is comfortable and familiar with your pets (and vice versa).
Make sure your back-up caretaker knows your pets' whereabouts and habits.
Let your back-up caretaker know where your pets' food is and where you normally feed them and keep their water bowl, and if they need any medication.
If you use a pet sitting service, find out in advance if they will be able to help in case of an emergency.
?Heat wave
High temperatures don't just make your pets uncomfortable; they can be dangerous. Here are basic guidelines for summer safety.
Never leave your pets in a parked car. Not even for a minute. Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. (Download our "Hot Car" flyer)
Watch the humidity. Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association says, "Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves, and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels?very quickly."
Don't rely on a fan. They don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people.
Provide lots of shade and water. Any time your pet is outside, make sure he or she has protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat?in fact, it makes it worse.
Limit exercise on hot days to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets who, because of their short noses, typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible.
Look for signs of heatstroke, including heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness.
Treat suspected heatstroke immediately. Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to her head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over her. Let her drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take her directly to a veterinarian.
Learn more about hot weather safety
?If the power goes out
Keep your pets with you. If you're forced to leave your home because you've lost electricity, take your pets. If it's summer, even just an hour or two in the sweltering heat, whether outdoors in a yard or inside an apartment, mobile home, or house, can be dangerous. Find a pet friendly hotel. If it's winter, don't be fooled by your pets' fur coats; it isn't safe to leave them in an un-heated house.
If you stay at home during a summer power outage, ask your local emergency management office if there are pet-friendly cooling centers in the area.

Having been exposed to art, photography, painting, architecture and design as a child growing up in a creative home, Karen Greenberg's inspiration and influence started quite early on. Karen's biggest influence however is nature - the textures, colors, sounds and glory of it.
Karen attended the American University in Washington DC, majoring in photography, where upon graduation, she became the Assistant Director of the Sander Gallery. Three years later she moved to New York City and through a fortuitous chain of events, she was given an opportunity to develop her design and art direction skills in the beauty/corporate world. After ten years in heels, she decided it was time to move on.
Karen co-founded the design firm, Greenberg Kingsley, NYC. The studio's main focus was music, entertainment and non-profit arts organizations. They designed it all - from CD covers to festival logos to brochures. Among the studio's many accolades was a Grammy? nomination for ?Best Boxed Set?, Blue Note Records 60th Anniversary. During her tenure as designer and art director, Karen became more and more interested in illustration and incorporated her self taught style into many of the studio's design projects. Little by little, she felt illustration taking her over and while she continues to work as a freelance designer and art director, she now focuses most of her attention on illustration and the challenge of staying in a perpetual state of creative evolution.

Text-based content:? If a web page doesn?t include the keywords and phrases that people looking for your products and services type into a search engine, that page isn?t likely to be considered relevant for those keywords and phrases by search engines.? As a result, the search engines are not likely to rank that page well compared to your competitors?.? Blogging to generate leads:? Blogging is by far one of the most powerful means of getting your website discovered.? Just as a great website is at the foundation of your online presence, consistent and thoughtful blogging is at the core of your internet marketing strategy.? There?s no shortage of factors that can influence a website visitor?s impression of your business or a search engines view of your site?s relevance.

During this time, he tried countless different treatments for heartburn and in fact found that a few of the treatments triggered his heartburn to come back worse. Additional treatments that he tried simply didn?t also work. He found his indigestion and tummy complications got so bad that he had to avoid particular meals and could not enjoy his life the means he would have liked. So he developed his very own heartburn treatment which he found not just eliminated his heartburn for a little while, however in fact stopped his intestinal complications for life.
Envision how nice it will be to be able to consume anything you want and not need to bother with the distressing burning in your tummy that will undoubtedly follow. Just how good would it feel not to suffer the continual symptoms of acid reflux? Are you dependent on acid reducers or antacids to ease your symptoms? Then you ought to consider ?Heartburn No More to ease your intestinal complications. Consider how much money you can save each month if you didn?t need to buy your prescription acid reducer. Not to mention not having to deal with the adverse effects that particular prescription drugs have been found to have on the body. With this treatment, you will find that there are no potentially negative adverse effects to identify. All you?ll get is relief.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Patriotic music? Check. Balloon drop? Check. Sign-waving delegates? Check. Viewer interest in this summer's Republican and Democratic national conventions? Still unclear.
With the parties' quadrennial presidential nominating gatherings fast approaching, organizers on both sides are bedeviled by a similar challenge: how to raise TV viewer interest in the multiday affairs, which threaten to be largely predictable spectacles nearly devoid of suspense.
The conventions were a ratings hit in 2008, when Democrat Barack Obama became the first black presidential nominee for a major party and Sarah Palin made her national debut as Republican John McCain's running mate. This year's gatherings promise fewer gee-whiz moments, with both party's nominees long settled and polls showing public confidence in politics and government at a record low.
Republicans are set to meet for four days in Tampa, Fla., beginning Monday to confer their party's nomination on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Despite all the detailed planning, there could be a surprise twist: Weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac poses a possible threat to Florida as the GOP gathers there.
The Democrats will convene Sept. 3-6 in Charlotte, N.C., in hopes of giving Obama another term. After a Labor Day celebration that Monday, the convention will begin officially Tuesday.
Party activists and political junkies are the built-in audience for both conventions, which typically receive wall-to-wall airtime on cable news stations and about an hour of prime time each night on the broadcast networks. But reaching viewers who are less politically attuned ? while, more importantly, influencing how they vote in the presidential contest ? presents both a puzzle and an opportunity for organizers.
"Conventions are the first time many voters pay attention, so they play a useful role in getting people thinking about the general election," said Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Fordham University and a scholar of party conventions. "They offer the opportunity to present the nominees in the most human and likable format possible. It's a unique opportunity for the parties to do that before a national audience."
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said his city was preparing for an event that would bring unprecedented attention.
"We're a city that has hosted four Super Bowls, but hosting a major international political event is the biggest thing we've ever undertaken by a long stretch," Buckhorn said in an interview.
Recent conventions have had their share of memorable moments, from Palin's red-meat speech in 2008 to Obama's similarly star-making appearance at the Democratic conclave in 2004. The 2000 Democratic nominee, Al Gore, gave audiences an eyeful when he grabbed his wife, Tipper, for a lengthy kiss on the convention stage.
Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, will enjoy his widest national exposure yet in Tampa. But it's still a far cry from the suspense generated at conventions in the past, where parties actually selected their nominees.
For that kind of drama, you have to go back to 1980, when President Jimmy Carter fought back a serious challenge from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy at the Democratic convention in New York. Kennedy pressed for a vote releasing delegates from their commitment to Carter ? a nail-biting exercise that played out on national TV.
These days, lacking that element of surprise, the parties use their conventions primarily to frame their nominees in a positive light and establish a deeper connection with voters.
"You can create spectacle with fireworks, sets or fancy music. But what you hope viewers take away is emotion," said Don Mischer, who produced the 2004 Democratic convention in Boston. "Emotion is what grabs people and makes it memorable. It also keeps them from flipping away."
In Tampa and Charlotte this year, organizers promise their conventions will offer both compelling pictures and a sophisticated interactive experience suited for the social media age. They're also trading jibes over what to expect from the respective gatherings.
Republican convention spokesman James Davis said viewers weary of the limping economy will be eager to tune into the GOP gathering.
"People are as engaged as they have ever been in politics right now because of the devastation they are feeling across the country. It's breathing new life and excitement into our convention," Davis said. "In Charlotte, you have an incumbent with a track record. Tampa offers something fresh and something new and a vision for moving forward."
Democratic convention spokeswoman Kristie Greco said the Charlotte gathering offered a more user-friendly experience than Republicans are promising ? from first lady Michelle Obama's email to supporters in 2010 announcing the convention's location, to a family-oriented picnic the night before the convention starts for anyone who wants to participate.
"In the past, the goal was to get the message out through key voices in prime time. That's the formula Republicans are following today," Greco said. "For us, the experience has evolved from broadcasting a message to engaging people in a conversation. It's not good enough anymore to make a statement from a podium."
Both sides are promising a robust online presence, including Facebook and Twitter pages and streaming video designed for smartphones and other digital devices. "People don't watch TV the way they did even four years ago," Greco said.
But ultimately, experts say, the conventions will be successful if the nominees can leave viewers with an enduring positive message, both through pictures and words.
"Obama needs to convey a more active sense that he's a leader and that he's strong. The political convention is not a time to take shots at Bain Capital," Mischer said, referring to the private equity firm Romney once headed. "Romney needs to get more specific about how he would implement his vision. And he needs three or four catchphrases people can latch onto."

If you live or work in a rural area of Victoria, it's likely that you have a chainsaw in your possession. Even though these machines can be highly useful in cutting up firewood and removing large amounts of wood and debris, they can also be highly dangerous and cause serious injury and even death if the proper safety precautions are not taken. Use the following tips to avoid some of the more common chainsaw accidents from occurring on your property:
Maintenance: Always ensure that the chainsaw is kept well maintained, clean and oiled. A rusty or un-oiled machine is prone to kickback, which can cause serious injuries.
Storage: Make sure that your chainsaw is kept well out of the reach of children and that the blade is covered to prevent anything from getting caught on it.
Starting: Whenever you are turning your chainsaw on, you need to make sure that it is on the ground and that you have one hand on the handle to hold it in place.
Protection: Always wear the proper safety gear when operating your chainsaw, such as goggles and earmuffs. This will protect your eyes from flying debris and your ears from the roaring engine.
Hands: Keep your hands away from the blade at all costs. You should also wear strong work gloves to protect your hands from the chain and to give you a better grip on the handle.
Use: Whenever you are operating a chainsaw, you need to ensure that your feet are planted firmly on the ground and that the blade is pointing away from your body.
Fuel: Make sure that you only use the mixture of petrol and oil that has been recommended by the manufacturer. If you are not sure what this mixture is, consult your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer.
Cutting: Don't try to cut with the nose of the chainsaw, as this causes the machine to kickback. This can cause serious injuries, as the blade is thrown back towards your face.
Handling: Even when your chainsaw is turned off, you should ensure that you always handle it with care. Even when stopped, the blade is highly sharp and can cut through skin.
At the end of the day, avoiding some of the most common chainsaw accidents can be achieved by simply exercising some common sense. If the blade is able to cut through tree trunks and limbs like they were butter, of course it's going to be highly sharp and pose a safety risk to those who misuse the machine. By keeping the above tips in mind, you will ensure that all your cutting experiences are safe ones.

Caltech chemists determine 1 way tumors meet their growing needs
PASADENA, Calif. Behaving something like ravenous monsters, tumors need plentiful supplies of cellular building blocks such as amino acids and nucleotides in order to keep growing at a rapid pace and survive under harsh conditions. How such tumors meet these burgeoning demands has not been fully understood. Now chemists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have shown for the first time that a specific sugar, known as GlcNAc ("glick-nack"), plays a key role in keeping the cancerous monsters "fed." The finding suggests new potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
The new results appear in this week's issue of the journal Science.
The research teamled by Linda Hsieh-Wilson, professor of chemistry at Caltechfound that tumor cells alter glycosylation, the addition of carbohydrates (in this case GlcNAc) to their proteins, in response to their surroundings. This ultimately helps the cancerous cells survive. When the scientists blocked the addition of GlcNAc to a particular protein in mice, tumor-cell growth was impaired.
The researchers used chemical tools and molecular modeling techniques developed in their laboratory to determine that GlcNAc inhibits a step in glycolysis (not to be confused with glycosylation), a metabolic pathway that involves 10 enzyme-driven steps. In normal cells, glycolysis is a central process that produces high-energy compounds that the cell needs to do work. But Hsieh-Wilson's team found that when GlcNAc attaches to the enzyme phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK1), it suppresses glycolysis at an early phase and reroutes the products of previous steps into a different pathwayone that yields the nucleotides a tumor needs to grow, as well as molecules that protect tumor cells. So GlcNAc causes tumor cells to make a tradethey produce fewer high-energy compounds in order to get the products they need to grow and survive.
"We have identified a novel molecular mechanism that cancer cells have co-opted in order to produce intermediates that allow them to grow more rapidly and to help them combat oxidative stress," says Hsieh-Wilson, who is also an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
This is not the first time scientists have identified a mechanism by which tumor cells might produce the intermediates they need to survive. But most other mechanisms have involved genetic alterations, or mutationspermanent changes that lead to less active forms of enzymes, for example. "What's unique here is that the addition of GlcNAc is dynamic and reversible," says Hsieh-Wilson. "This allows a cancer cell to more rapidly alter its metabolism depending on the environment that it encounters."
In their studies, Hsieh-Wilson's team found that this glycosylationthe addition of GlcNAc to PFK1is enhanced under conditions associated with tumors, such as low oxygen levels. They also found that glycosylation of PFK1 was sensitive to the availability of nutrients. If certain nutrients were absent, glycosylation was increased, and the tumor was able to compensate for the dearth of nutrients by changing the cell's metabolism.
When the researchers analyzed human breast and lung tumor tissues, they found GlcNAc-related glycosylation was elevated two- to fourfold in the majority of tumors relative to normal tissue from the same patients. Then, working with mice injected with human lung-cancer cells, the researchers replaced the existing PFK1 enzymes with either the normal PFK1 enzyme or a mutant form that could no longer be glycosylated. The mice with the mutant form of PFK1 showed decreased tumor growth, demonstrating that blocking glycosylation impairs cancerous growth.
The work suggests at least two possible avenues for future investigations into fighting cancer. One would be to develop compounds that prevent PFK1 from becoming glycosylated, similar to the mutant PFK1 enzymes in the present study. The other would be to activate PFK1 enzymes in order to keep glycolysis operating normally and help prevent cancer cells from altering their cellular metabolism in favor of cancerous growth.
Hsieh-Wilson's group has previously studied GlcNAc-related glycosylation in the brain. They have demonstrated, for example, that the addition of GlcNAc to a protein called CREB inhibits the protein's ability to turn on genes needed for long-term memory storage. On the other hand, they have also shown that having significantly lower levels of GlcNAc in the forebrain leads to neurodegeneration. "The current thinking is that there's a balance between too little and too much glycosylation," says Hsieh-Wilson. "Being at either extreme make things go awry, whether it's in the brain or in the case of cancer cells."

I am not an expert and I don?t pretend to be. I have, however, learned a few things about attachment since we started this journey last fall. Here are my top?7 practical ways to foster attachment in older adopted children:
Implement chat time. Each night before bed, Daffy and I head to her room for ?chat time.??This allows her time to unwind and process her day. Initially we talked about simple things like ?What was the best part of your day?? as we got to know each other, but as our relationship has progressed, we have talked about far more serious issues like the abuse she suffered while living with her biological family and her fears of her biological brother. This is a time that she and I both look forward to. She?s been telling me recently that she can?t sleep without having our chat time and I kid with her that I will have to come to her house when she is married so we can still have our nightly chats! (She assures me her husband will do it, LOL)
Read books together. The books don?t always need to be about foster care or adoption, but if you are looking for adoption or foster care related books,?here are a few I highly recommend. Reading these books has been incredibly helpful to Daffy. I can see her connect through the stories, gaining a sense that she is not alone in her experiences and learning to trust that we will finally be her forever family.
Cook together. Give them the chance to succeed. Daffy and the family support specialist baked muffins together during one visit and for the next week that followed, Daffy wanted to bake every single day. She was so proud of her new found ability! Spending time together in the kitchen allows for low intensity conversations. These are the moments that, one at a time, build attachments.
Touch! Touch adopted children as often and in as many ways as is appropriate based on their history- hugs, hand holding, foot massages, a pat on the back? just keep touching! Daffy & I have created our very own handshake-style good night kiss involving kisses, hugs, funny faces and handshakes! It?s something that she and I share that connects us?exclusively?to each other. She beams when other people see us do it, knowing that its unique just to her and me.
Play! Get down to their level and interact. This was really uncomfortable for me at first, but I learned some amazing things about how Daffy?s mind was working when I joined her in playing with her Little Pet Shop and other toys. I could see her hopes, dreams, and even fears play out through the way she played.
Enjoy family meals together. Our family never sat around the table together for meals before Daffy came to live with us. We were busy people with busy lives. We felt connected and this didn?t seem important to us. Once Daffy moved in, we saw this as a critical time together- a time when we?weren?t?meeting with a therapist or social worker, a time when there was no battle over homework and a time where the tv was OFF. This was (and is) time that we could spend all together sharing and getting to know each other.
Have realistic expectations. Above all, know the battle you are facing. Read books on attachment. Surf the internet for blogs of people that have gone before you in similar situations. Accept that adopted children will have attachment issues (whether it?s full blown Reactive Attachment Disorder or somewhere else on the spectrum). Understand that your adopted child will not attach to you in the same way that you will attach to them. Give them space when they need it, but don?t be afraid to push sometimes, too.?It?s hard to see the forest through the trees when it comes to attachment, but know that the work you are doing with your adopted child WILL pay off. You will see miraculous gains if you give it time.
