(AP) ? A Frenchman and an American shared the Nobel Prize in physics Tuesday for inventing methods to peer into the bizarre quantum world of ultra-tiny particles, work that could help in creating a new generation of super-fast computers.

Serge Haroche of France and American David Wineland opened the door to new experiments in quantum physics in the 1990s by showing how to observe individual atoms and particles of light called photons while preserving their quantum properties.

Quantum physics, a field about a century old, explains a lot about nature but includes some weird-sounding behavior by individual, isolated particles. A particle resists our idea of either-or: it's not here or there, it's sort of both. It's not spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise, but a bit of both. It gets a definite location or spin only when it's measured.

Working separately, the two scientists, both 68, developed "ingenious laboratory methods" that allowed them to manage and measure and control fragile quantum states, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Wineland traps ions ? electrically charged atoms ? and measures them with light, while Haroche controls and measures photons.

"Their ground-breaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of superfast computer based on quantum physics," the academy said. "The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time."

Haroche is a professor at the College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. Wineland is a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, and the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Haroche said he was out walking with his wife in Paris when he got the call from the Nobel judges.

"I was in the street and passing a bench so I was able to sit down," Haroche told a news conference in Stockholm by telephone. "It's very overwhelming."

He said his work in the realm of quantum physics could ultimately lead to unimaginably fast computers. "You can do things which are prohibited by the laws of classical physics," he told The Associated Press.

Haroche also said quantum research could help make GPS navigating systems more accurate.

Wineland told the AP he was sleeping when his wife answered the phone at 3:30 a.m. local time in Denver. He was utterly shocked even though his name had come up before.

"But actually I hadn't heard anything this time around. It was certainly surprising and kind of overwhelming right now," he said. "I feel like I got a lot smarter overnight."

Asked how he will celebrate, Wineland said: "I'll probably be pretty worn out by this evening. I'll probably have a glass of wine and fall asleep."

Wineland took pains to note that many people are working in the field. "First of all, a lot of people have been working on advanced computers and atomic clocks for a long time. It's a bit embarrassing to focus on just two individuals," he said.

Wineland told reporters that he thinks that in the next decade or so, quantum computers will cross a threshold and be able to handle problems that are intractable on today's computers.

"At this point I wouldn't recommend anybody buy stock in a quantum computing company ... but we're optimistic," he said.

The Nobel judges said quantum computers could radically change people's lives in the way that classical computers did last century, but a full-scale quantum computer is still decades away.

"The calculations would be incredibly much faster and exact and you would be able to use it for areas like ... measuring the climate of the earth," said Lars Bergstrom, the secretary of the prize committee.

Christopher Monroe, who does similar work at the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, said the awarding of the prize to the two men "is not a big surprise to me. ... It was sort of obvious that they were a package."

Monroe said that thanks to the bizarre properties of the quantum world, when he and Wineland worked together in the 1990s, they were able to put a single atom in two places simultaneously.

At that time, it wasn't clear that trapping single atoms could help pave the way to superfast quantum computers, he said. That whole field "just fell into our laps."

In an ordinary computer, information is represented in bits, each of which is either a zero or a one. But in a quantum computer, an individual particle can essentially represent a zero and a one at the same time. If scientists can make such particles work together, certain kinds of calculations could be done with blazing speed.

One example is factoring, the process of discovering what numbers can be multiplied together to produce a given number. That has implications for breaking codes, Monroe said.

The physics prize was the second of the 2012 Nobel Prizes to be announced, with the medicine award going Monday to stem cell pioneers John Gurdon of Britain and Japan's Shinya Yamanaka. Each award is worth 8 million kronor, or about $1.2 million.

Only two women have won the physics prize since it was first awarded in 1901: Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.

The prizes are always handed out on Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896.

Raleigh, NC??Artist Frank Poor?s interest in architecture ? and more specifically, the changing southern landscape ? began when his childhood home, Woodstock, GA, once a small town of approximately 500 people, experienced a boom in the 1970s and 80s. Buildings went up and the town grew to 30,000 residents seemingly overnight. Contemporary structures replaced old, historic architecture.?The rural built environment that had grown organically and over time to reflect local needs was replaced with homogenous contemporary structures that bore no relationship to place.

Much of what Poor viewed as meaningful was torn down and replaced. In most cases, the new homes and businesses were transitory. For Poor, the growth became equated with impermanence, characterized by dated construction built with cheap materials.

Small towns across the country can tell tales similar to the one Poor experienced in Woodstock.?These towns, particularly those in the southeastern United States, have become central to Poor?s recent mixed-media works. The three-dimensional basswood sculptures presented in?Traces, use the language of southern vernacular architecture (through both form and photographic imagery) to explore memory and loss.

Though originally trained as a sculptor, photography has become the foundation for much of Poor?s recent work. In 2009, when he began his current series, he predominantly relied on found or historic photographs. More recently however, he shoots his own images. Though Poor currently lives in Rhode Island all of the photographic imagery in?Traces?was taken in the southeast, namely Georgia, where Poor was raised, and Alabama. Capturing his own photographs allows Poor to more aptly portray his vision of a particular moment in time and place.

The process of finding or shooting photographs is a method by which Poor gathers information ? research to aid in his investigations. He notes, ?photographs are bits of evidence;? they are artifacts that suggest a narrative, but only tell part of the story. As an artist, it is his job to extrapolate upon these photographs, and pull together all of the fragments to develop a comprehensive vision. The photographs are just one component, one tactic, in communicating his idea. The images, at times printed onto wood veneers (cherry, knotty pine, birch, etc.), and more recently printed onto transparencies, are incorporated into three-dimensional architectural forms that Poor constructs of square basswood dowels. The pieces range in scale from as small as nine inches to as large as seven feet. Most of the forms hang on the wall, though larger works are placed on the gallery floor.

Jon Stewart reveals Obama's October Surprise

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

Jon Stewart still hasn?t forgiven President Barack Obama for his debate performance last week. In fact, judging by the Wednesday night ?Daily Show,? his frustration has only gotten worse.

?Election watchers are on the lookout this late in the campaign season for what they refer to as an October Surprise. Well, it appears that time is upon us as evidenced by the recent presidential debate in which President Obama revealed his explosive October Surprise -- that he has given up,? Stewart said to open the political commentary section of the show.

Harsh. But it didn?t end there. Stewart also isn't a fan of Obama?a comeback strategy, which involves a one-way strategic alliance with "Sesame Street," as evidenced by Obama?s rally quip: ?Thank Goodness someone is finally getting tough on Big Bird.?

?Excellent ... next day comeback. It?s that 3 a.m. ?Oh, that?s what I should have said!?? Stewart said.

But the quip has turned into a full-fledged marketing strategy, with TV ads rushed to market ridiculing Mitt Romney for taking on "Sesame Street" instead of Wall Street, and will.i.am beginning a rally for the president by playing the theme song.

?That ad allowed John McCain -- John McCain! -- to laugh at you!? Stewart said. ?Let it go!?

This wouldn?t be the United States of America if companies weren?t using the presidential campaign to try and move product.

Both 7-Eleven and Pizza Hut have marketing strategies tied to the election. The red-or-blue cups campaign, where customers theoretically pick the cup of the candidate they support, as opposed to the one nearest to the Big Gulp machine or not covered with Slurpee slime, has Obama with a 20-point lead.

Those are just about the only poll numbers that are trending in the president?s direction though, as Stephen Colbert noted on "The Colbert Report," the results are likely biased. It?s not like Mitt Romney can vote for himself there, given that many Mormons skip caffeine.

Pizza Hut, meanwhile, is offering 30 years worth of free food to anyone who will use next week?s Town Hall debate to ask the candidates about their pizza topping preferences. ?We recognize that there are a lot of serious issues to be debated, but we also know a lot less serious -- but no less important -- ones are being discussed inside houses across the country,? its statement said.

?True. Issues like 'What the (expletive) has happened to American Democracy?'? Colbert responded.

Colbert later interviewed Naomi Wolf, author of ?Vagina: A New Biography.? She?s been a guest on the show before, and the host gave credit where it was due.

?The last time you were here, five years ago, you were here for the book 'The End of America.' You were like Jeremiah on the mountain telling us we were just a couple of years away from a Totalitarian Police State that would crush all of our rights,? Colbert said. ?How did you stop it??

Wolf didn?t take the credit. Perhaps she?s saving that story for her next book.

Meanwhile on "Late Show," David Letterman reached out to Mitt Romney from afar and said that "job one," if he wants to win this election, is to come on his program "and shut me up." Letterman then took a look into Romney's future following a big loss at the polls, with a series of made-up headlines that pointed out the reason for the loss: His failure to go on Letterman's show. "Just prove I'm a dumb-a-- punk, and you've got to come here and do it now," he dared Romney.?

And over on "The Tonight Show," Jay Leno looked more deeply into who was behind the airplane that flew over a speech Romney made on a farm in Ohio. The plane carried a banner that read "Crack down on Wall Street, not 'Sesame Street.'" His discovery: The two jokers flying the plane were none other than ... Ernie and Bert.
