As I sit in my backyard at this very moment enjoying a warm, late spring breeze, listening to the wind chimes and birds chatting to and fro, I am struck by how few of us pay attention to the wee details of life. In 2010 I began a journey of quieting my mind, body and spirit and what began as an external awareness of paying attention to the wee details became an inward awareness of self.
For the past seven years, I have worked with families teaching moms the importance of shutting off and shutting down. As my mom clients allowed themselves time to become quiet, something ?magical? happened within the household ? everyone became peaceful calm and relaxed , and in some cases it even affected pet?s behaviour!. Parents also reported their children could focus better, laughed more and the families enjoyed spending time together.
As my coaching practice shifted to working specifically with children, I began to use meditation and visualization as a way of helping them deal with many common place situations including insomnia, anxiety, busy brain syndrome (inability to shut off their brains), feelings of being overwhelmed (at school) and focusing both at home and at school. Within one or two sessions, these kiddos felt calmer, better supported and empowered both at home and at school.
There has been much research on how meditation has supported adults and we are just beginning to understand the need within our communities to have moments of quiet our super charged lives.
How can we begin to support our children through meditation? Here are a few tips to get you started:
If you are still having difficulty getting children to quiet, find some meditative or soft music to play ? using the old ?music soothes the savage beast? technique. There are also many wonderful guided meditations online for children. Remember meditation takes practice and everyone has their own way of meditating ? there are no wrong or right ways to meditate.

FINANCE Secretary John Swinney will reconvene a taskforce to save 1,700 jobs at a closure-threatened meat processing plant today.
The second meeting of the Hall's of Broxburn Taskforce will take place in the West Lothian town this morning.
The taskforce was established to safeguard jobs following the decision by Vion Food UK to consult on the future of its plant at Broxburn.
It comprises company representatives, Usdaw, West Lothian Council, the MP and MSP for the area, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International, Skills Development Scotland, Job Centre Plus and Quality Meat Scotland.
Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead will also attend.
Plant owners Vion Food UK announced a 90-day consultation earlier this month on proposals to close the site, which was said to be losing ?79,000 a day despite heavy investment.
The factory employs 1,150 permanent and 595 agency staff. It is a major processing facility for Scottish pork used to make sausages and other meat products, handling about 8,000 pigs each week.
First Minister Alex Salmond and Scottish Secretary Michael Moore have both pledged their support for workers at the plant.
Following the first meeting of the taskforce on July 5, Mr Swinney said they were committed to "maintaining continuity of business" at the plant to deliver "a positive economic future for the workforce and community of Broxburn".
Mr Lochhead has said the closure would have implications for the wider Scottish community, particularly the pig sector and agricultural industry.

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Rebels facing off against government troops in Tajikistan's volatile east began laying down their weapons on Sunday after the authorities threatened to launch a new offensive to capture a former warlord accused of killing a local security chief.
President Inomali Rakhmon had called a ceasefire late last Tuesday after heavy fighting, promising to pardon anyone who disarmed while demanding that the rebels handed over Tolib Ayombekov, the former warlord, along with three fighters.
A senior Tajik security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity on Sunday that the rebels had started to surrender at about 0200 GMT, handing over "dozens of guns".
"We now hope that everything will end peacefully," he said.
Tajikistan's interior ministry confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "Members of illegal armed units in the Gorno-Badakhshan region have started turning in their arms ... Those laying down their weapons are immediately amnestied."
Rakhmon had sent troops into the area on Tuesday in pursuit of former opposition field commander Ayombekov, accusing him of killing Major-General Abdullo Nazarov, the head of the Gorno-Badakhshan branch of the GKNB, successor of the Soviet-era KGB, on July 21.
Officials said the heavy fighting that followed killed 17 troops, 30 rebels and one civilian, in violence that raised concerns about the stability of the majority Muslim nation.
On Saturday - after several days of talks - the authorities issued a final warning, telling the rebels they would launch a new large-scale military offensive against them unless they surrendered.
"MAIN THING IS THAT THIS NOW ENDS PEACEFULLY"
However, not all of the authorities' demands were met.
"At this stage, there is no talk about the surrender of Ayombekov and other rebels accused of killing Nazarov," the same security source told Reuters on Sunday. "Militants say they are in Afghanistan, and we also do not exclude this."
"The main thing is that this (stand-off) now ends peacefully, and we will return to Ayombekov's capture later."
After Nazarov was killed, the government sent helicopters, armored vehicles and thousands of troops into the area. Nazarov's agency had accused Ayombekov's gang of smuggling drugs, tobacco and precious stones.
Ayombekov, who fought against Rakhmon in a 1992-97 civil war before receiving a government job in the peace deal that ended the conflict, denied any involvement in Nazarov's killing.
Fearing possible infiltration of Taliban-linked fighters who support Ayombekov, Tajikistan closed all its border crossings with Afghanistan, only allowing trucks carrying cargo for NATO troops there to pass.
Some analysts said that the assault - the first military operation on such a scale in almost two years - was a show of force by Rakhmon, whose control over parts of the Central Asian state remains tenuous 15 years after the end of the civil war.
Separated from Afghanistan by the Pyandzh river, Gorno-Badakhshan is an autonomous region where the authority of the central government is particularly fragile. Most of its 250,000 inhabitants sided with the opposition during the civil war.
Tajikistan is the poorest of 15 former Soviet republics. Tens of thousands died in its civil war, in which Rakhmon's Moscow-backed troops fought a loosely aligned opposition that included many Islamist fighters.
Former imperial master Russia still has 6,000 troops stationed in Tajikistan, its largest military deployment abroad and one which is meant to act as a bulwark against the threat of Islamist violence spilling across the Afghan border when NATO pulls its troops out in 2014.

You may not have heard of the Optimus Vu, LG's answer to the Samsung Galaxy Note. The Vu is a 4:3 aspect ratio, 5-inch phone with pen input, released in South Korea earlier this year running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and it's due for an ICS update any day now. It's also yet to appear at all outside of Korea, so it's somewhat surprising to see it emerge today, apparently sporting a big Verizon Wireless logo atop its squarish XGA display.
The image above, and a few more, have been published by ?Android Police?, and by all accounts they appear to show a Verizon Optimus Vu (or LG VS950) running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, with Big Red's logo up top, and its 4G LTE branding around the back.
First announced at MWC in February, the Vu hasn't made too much of a splash on the smartphone world, so it's a little puzzling to see it as a candidate to appear on Verizon's network now. We should also point out that just because one prototype unit exists, it doesn't necessarily follow that the Vu will actually launch on Verizon. We've been through that before (hey there, HTC Merge).

Much has been made about the U.S. government?s botched $535 million in loan guarantees to Solyndra LLC, the California solar-panel maker whose business imploded, leaving taxpayers burned.
Less known is that the government, in its quest to spur investment in environmentally friendly vehicles, has been handing out essentially free money to well-known companies that don?t seem to need cheap credit.
Since 2009, the Federal Financing Bank, the U.S. Treasury Department bank that funded Solyndra, has been providing loans with rates hovering near 1 percent to Nissan Corp., Ford Motor Corp. and other companies to develop electric cars and other fuel-efficient vehicles. These loans, guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Energy, so far total more than $8.4 billion and extend for up to 30 years.
The theory behind the program is that cheap, risk-free loans will encourage auto companies to invest in clean-energy technology and production that they might not otherwise bankroll.
Developing alternatives to gas-guzzling vehicles is a worthy public goal, but providing loans to companies that can get their own financing in the capital markets is a questionable way to reach it. A better use of government money would be to encourage consumer demand ? by continuing, and expanding, tax credits or other incentives for people who buy vehicles that use little or no gas.
To date, the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program has made loans to five companies, including $5.9 billion to Ford to upgrade auto plants across the U.S. and $1.4 billion to Nissan to retool a Tennessee plant.
Fisker Automotive ? which makes a luxury plug-in car that costs $103,000 ? got $529 million, and Tesla Motors got $465 million to build plug-in vehicles and components. An additional $50 million is going to the Vehicle Production Group to make a natural-gas-powered, wheelchair-accessible van. Energy officials say the administration continues to review additional projects.
The loans carry low interest because the Federal Financing Bank bases its rates on Treasury?s borrowing costs. In May, Ford (F)drew down more than $148 million from a guaranteed loan with a 1.3 percent interest rate.
Such favorable terms, along with the government guarantee, might be understandable if automakers were still struggling to access private financing, as they were during the recession. That?s not the case. Ford?s credit rating, for instance, recently returned to investment-grade status. In June, the company?s finance unit sold $1.5 billion of unsecured five-year notes with a 3 percent coupon. Fisker Automotive, a closely held company, has raised more than $1 billion in private funds from investors such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
The vehicle initiative is also experiencing hiccups. Fisker has suffered battery-pack glitches and missed delivery deadlines for a Delaware factory, resulting in its losing access to federal funds. A 2011 Government Accountability Office report faulted the DOE vehicle program for a lack of expertise and performance measures.
The U.S. is already prodding companies to develop more energy-efficient vehicles in other ways: President Barack Obama?s fuel-efficiency standards will require cars to get 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Analysts say only so much of that gain can come from improving gas-powered cars ? the rest will have to come from using flexible fuels or electric models. The U.S. tax code also offers incentives to purchase energy-efficient cars, including a $7,500 credit for some hybrids and plug-in vehicles.
The government should use its limited budget to extend and expand these credits, or to provide refunds to people who buy greener cars ? much as the Cash for Clunkers program did to spark sales of more fuel-efficient cars.
If there?s any lesson from the 2008-2009 auto bailouts, it?s that car companies should make the cars people actually want to buy. Dangling carrots in front of those buyers to urge them toward greater fuel efficiency is something the government can usefully do.
